last year saw casablanca-based cosmo records launch its most ambitious project todate, celebrating five years of cross-cultural collaboration. the three vinyl releasesfeatured producers such as san proper, radiq, pier bucci and dandy jack working with moroccan musicians to create a true fusion between modern electronics and ancient traditions. the purpose of cosmo has always been to find a natural meeting place between thesedistinct musical forms, bringing out the best strengths of each practice through real time spent together in the studio, where each artist can truly understand the other in a shared quest for sonic harmony. as such, this latest release marks a step forward in exploring this idea through a new series entitled cosmo jam. as the title suggests, the focus here is on live improvisation. in late 2014 parisian producers masomenos and vadim svoboda travelled to morocco and set up their equipment at the coda casablanca music center. they were joined by m’hamed el menjra playing bass, abdessamad boussahfa on violin and sanhaji on darbuka, and the ensuing jam sessions between these musicians now make their way on to vinyl. no editing or post-production took place – the music you hear on the record was created entirely in the moment. each track highlights the magic of a different instrument – on “be” menjra’s double bass comes twisting through effects processing and subtle distortion, meeting with a low-slung broken beat groove from the visiting french producers. sanhaji’s thrilling percussive flair on the darbuka flirts perfectly with the crisp programming of drums and bass on the uptempo “kaled” and the more laid-back “petit”. boussahfa’s violin makes for some of the most arresting moments on the release, meeting with intricate minimalist rhythms on “mon” and shining in the heart-rending ambience of “frere”. presented across two 12”s, this collection of six tracks tells a most honest account of how gifted artists from entirely different disciplines can find a common ground and create something truly unique. without any studio trickery to hide behind, this is the concept of cosmo records laid bare, and the results prove it is a concept worth exploring further.

kapote loves the funk. and he loves blaxploitation movies. the black underground cinema from the 1970ies. kapote samples dirty talk from these movies and puts it on his bass lines. melodic basslines with a heavy 1070 funk vibe. bass lines that can create a sexual tension. kapote adds a few warm, jazzy rhodes piano chords and a lot of reverbs and filtering. and the music rolls. often more like a jam then like a constructed piece of music. in the highest points this music is pure endorphin. it s 4 to the floor - but it has a soulful analogue sound. kapote says he was listening to records from old detroit label red planet and parisian downtempo pioneers motorbass and la funk mob while making this record. and yes, the vibe is there. like these guys kapote likes to build his musical trips around snippets from old funk vinyl. adding beats with vintage drum machines and creating an eclectic trip into a universe full of jazzy bits, noisy drums and dirty samples.

laate is the new project of clayton guifford (unrelated / fragil). for this second release, we are very glad to welcome - the black tone - (rawthencity / appian).- circadian attraction e<p - is just as ethereal as abyssal tone records, where nagging mpc s swing and reverberation s effects are placing great emphasis on minimalist compositions, strictly dedicated to the dancefloor.on a side: - circadian attraction ep - is backed by a dynamic rhythm with analog tones. a meticulous architecture temple where time stop. a techno recital of limpid beauty gliding on a groovy bassline that will make every soundsystem whirr.on b1: - aquatic redox - is a plunging us into deep submarine daydreams. a digital bath with salty taste and hypnotic dampness. everything is a quiet, question & answers between the different elements are bouncing over and over in the atmosphere, constantly captivating the attention. a perfect balance between strength and subtlety. finally on b2, - aquatic redox - s remix is released by the famous producer: janeret (rutilance /aku). after an -haute-couture- intro, slightly breaked, we find in this remix the galactic synths typical of the talented young parisian’s repertoire. clear, precise and extremely mastered, this rework put everyone in agreement on the dancefloor.

one of the founding members of apollonia, shonky was responsible for his label’s very first release back in 2012 with ‘the minneapolis touch’. outside of working on the trio’s debut lp ‘tour a tour’, shonky has been relatively quiet on the solo tip. here on apollonia’s 25th release we’re treated to four new cuts from the berlin-based parisian, kicking off with plombie&#768,,re (plumber in english). shonky injects a variety of unusual sounds, which revolve around a jaunty bassline, while voices dip in and out of the background, repeating the mantra ‘house music’ together with other difficult to decipher vocal clips. the track has a catchy rhythm that bounces along with aplomb. up next ‘house me’ is a sleazy, mischievous cut with a deadly low end and a seductive vocal that urges you to ‘house me’. as the bassline rumbles, high pitched effects add a hypnotic element to the track. badboy business.on the b-side we have ‘perchee’, which is powered by cleverly layered percussion, which is almost ‘live’ sounding. another one of those ‘shonky’ basslines gets us straight into the groove, with utterly contagious beats – this is one to shake the dance floor down its core. finally, ‘cosmopolis’ has that inner city realness flowing through with the chatter of a street corner in the background, a killer b-line and one of those classic vocal samples that is oh so familiar and gets you nodding your head as soon as you hear it. and there it is, four dance floor cuts with plenty of depth and groove in true shonky style… c est formidable!
